Our Research
SGCP’s primary research region comprises eleven southern states plus the eastern forested counties of Texas and Oklahoma. This region contains over 214 million acres, or approximately 29%, of all forest land in the nation. Recent inventories indicate that 89% of forest land in the South is privately owned, with 154 million acres held by non-industrial private forest landowners and 36 million acres held by forest industry. In addition to the southern US, SGCP scientists also collaborate with researchers around the country and globe to address issues that threaten forest health over ever increasing boundaries.

SGCP researchers conduct integrated assessments of forest ecosystems in response to global change issues. Our work contributes significantly to regional and national efforts to study global changes and their effects on natural resources. Our research is designed to provide forest management solutions to environmental risks and other impacts on natural resources through the development of management strategies.
