The SGCP is pleased to welcome five summer interns to the staff. The interns will assist SGCP staff by performing office, field and laboratory duties while gaining valuable experience. The larger than usual number of interns was aided by funding through the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, Civil Rights Committee Multicultural Workforce Strategic Initiative and an NSF GIS Grant through the Department of Environmental, Earth and Geospatial Sciences at NC Central University.
We’re excited to have these interns with us and look forward to a very busy and productive summer field season. Some of the work they’ll be performing includes developing databases and biomass regressions, summarizing datasets, characterizing root profiles, determining root biomass and carbon content, estimating leaf area through multiple techniques, measuring soil moisture, temperature and respiration, quantifying down dead wood fuel loads, and using GIS to create, manipulate and run models.
